This issue we talk to Peter Ramsay, Environmental Manager
Q1. How long have you worked at Mars Drinks?
I have worked at Mars Drinks for just over three years. Previously I’ve worked in higher education and the chemicals industry.
Q2. Can you provide a short overview of your current role / key responsibilities?
I have two main areas of responsibility, both equally important. I’m responsible for the environmental management and sustainability of the Mars Drinks UK business which covers: waste management; ISO 14001 environmental accreditation; reducing power and utility consumption; implementing environmental improvement projects and sustainability aspects, impacts and improvements. I’m also the safety manager for the Mars Drinks UK business. This involves looking after the safety and welfare of our associates and contractors and also ensuring we have safe systems of work within the business.
Q3. How important is sustainability and environmental management at Mars Drinks?
Extremely! We’re setting improvement targets with a long term goal of being carbon neutral within one generation. This will drive significant change within the business in terms of packaging, preparation, distribution and power sourcing.
Q4. What is your greatest achievement to date in your time at Mars Drinks?
Converting the two Mars Drinks factory sites from landfill to Waste To Energy at the end of 2009.
Q5. What do you believe is most important in terms of environmental management: reduce, reuse or recycle?
There is a recognised hierarchy with reduction at the top, followed by reuse and then recycling. In practice recycling can be important as the short term option, whilst longer term reduction strategies are put in place.
