A Brighter Tomorrow in Kenya
Posted at 06:13 in Customer News : Sustainability
Kenya is a popular choice amongst the FLAVIA Origins range of coffee. As sourcing the freshest ingredients is an essential element of our unique Source. Seal. Serve™ process we thought we would give you an insight into where our Kenya coffee beans are grown.
We set extremely high standards for our drinks and through our own Brighter Tomorrow at Origin programme and work with the Rainforest Alliance, we can offer the best possible products as well as maintaining sustainable operations.
A large volume of coffee in Kenya is produced by small
cooperatives rather than large coffee estates. A few months ago we launched a new Brighter Tomorrow at Origin revitalisation and modernisation project to help train the 1,700 farmers of the Kandara Cooperative in best practice coffee farming. Additional sponsorship included a new coffee and tree nursery as well as metal drying tables.
We’ve just got back from seeing how the project was progressing and were delighted to hear that the farmers are already seeing the benefits. Following additional Rainforest Alliance quality training, crop quality is already improving and the new drying tables allow coffee to dry more quickly ensuring a consistent coffee quality.
The passion and engagement of the local farmers was obvious and they were keen for us to visit the local primary school where 600 of their children study. It was a fantastic experience to see first-hand how the project is benefiting the lives of the farmers and their families and they were delighted to be able to say thank you for the support.
There’s already a shortlist of potential projects to support in the year ahead and we’re very excited about watching these develop.
FACT - Sales of sustainable products have increased by 44% over the last 5 years.
